Review of The Great Gatsby

Verdict: 5 Stars

The amazing thing about iconic works of literature is the way the story evolves as the reader evolves. So many people have had to read The Great Gatsby in high school English class, and I have to wonder what those same people think of the story when they revisit it after decades of their own lives have passed.

I can’t imagine that a work depicting the robber baron era really speaks to the majority of high school students, but in this climate when so much of our daily lives is impacted by the actions of our wealthiest elite, reading Gatsby didn’t feel dated for me at all.

The character descriptions and the depictions of their activities is so vivid that, to someone reading it for pleasure and not because a cranky AP English teacher required it, it feels just as relevant now as it must have when Fitzgerald unleashed it on the reading world.

I loved every minute of Gatsby, and hope that people who gave it a once-over in high school rediscover it soon.
