Everything seems to be wrong with the world right now, but listening to The Dutch House by Ann Patchett helped me a lot! This story of a brother and sister unfolds through the eyes of the brother over five decades from childhood through late middle age. Brought up in tremendous wealth by their hugely successful father, they are exiled from the grand Dutch House by the most evil stepmother if there ever was one. Their devotion to each other carries them through as they create substantial lives for themselves, yet they are unable to let go of the loss of their fortune and the undoing of their family by circumstances beyond their control. The smallest details and moments in this fabulous book become vibrant stand-alone scenes through Patchett’s amazing storytelling.
